  • If you see an error at the beginning of dmesg about mdadm: error opening /dev/md<something>: No such file or directory, you probably have a zombie array.
  • Mdadm devices are read at boot from /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf and then mounted to the filesystem at /etc/fstab.
  • If you update /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf, also inform the initramfs of the updates with update-initramfs -u.
